Meta Meltdown: Why did Facebook, Insta, WhatsApp go dark?

Sci-Tech Desk: Leading social media platforms controlled by Meta faced an unprecedented blackout on Wednesday, 11 December 2024. The users of social meta platforms Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp noticed this malfunction after experiencing slowdown and inability to access these applications.

Users also faced constant buffering, login issues, automatic logouts, and messages of systematic errors while trying to use these platforms. These hiccups were observed around the world from India, UK to US, and affected millions of social media users.

Following this blackout, Meta received complained from many users. Consequently, it had to resort to using its rival social media platform X to apologise its users. It stated that it was aware of the technical issue impacting some users, and they were working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible.

When things started improving later at the midnight and early in the morning, Meta came out with another post mentioning that it was 99% on its way to fix the issue and were doing some last checks. It also thanked the users for bearing with them.
