Tribal leader Droupadi Murmu nominated for Indian presidential elections

National Desk: Droupadi Murmu has been named as the candidate from the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) for the upcoming presidential election in India.

Murmu was named as the nominee for the highest parliamentary post by the president of the Bharatya Janata Party (BJP) Jagat Prakash Nadda after a meeting of its parliamentary board members and top leaders of the party on Tuesday.

After officially announcing her name for the post, Nadda in a tweet said that Murmu will be of great benefit for the country as she possesses a lot of expertise in different fields. Besides, she is well known for her contributions towards the development of the marginalized sections of the society.

Nadda also added that her personality is an inspiration for all of us.

Similarly, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also appreciated her ‘rich administrative experience’ and her contributions in empowering the poor and downtrodden of the society.

Modi also expressed his confidence on Murmu and said that she will be a ‘Great President.’

Born in a village in the Mayurbhanj district in Odisha, Droupadi Murmu is a member of the BJP from the state. Beginning her political career at the Panchayat level as an elected councillor, Murmu went on to become the Governor of Jharkhand from 2015 to 2021.

Additionally, she has also served as a state minister in Odisha for various departments. In 2007 she was also bestowed with a special award by the Odisha State Assembly for her outstanding work as an MLA.
