Ranil Wickremesinghe is the new Sri Lankan PM; know his career & education
Global Desk: Ranil Wickremesinghe was sown-in as the new Prime Minister of Sri Lanka amidst its worst ever financial crisis on Thursday.
Wickremesinghe who is the leader of the United National Party (UNP) replaced Mahindra Rajapaksa after the former leader’s resignation in response to the growing protests against him and his family led government in the island nation.
According to recent reports, soon after he took over the position of the PM, Wickremesinghe appointed a committee to assure the safety and protection of the anti-government protesters who were putatively attacked by the supporters of the former leader Rajapaksa.
Apart from being a political leader, by profession the 73-year-old Wickremesinghe is a law attorney in Sri Lanka.
In terms of his education, he completed his law degree from the University of Ceylon in Colombo. He also received an honorary doctorate degree from the Deakin University in Australia.
He held multiple portfolios during his political career spanning over 45 years. He held the positions of Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Minister of Youth Affairs and Employment, Minister of Education, Minister of Industry and so forth.
Ranil Wickremesinghe has ascended to the position of the Prime Minister when the nation is face-to-face with an horrific economic crisis. As a leader he has his work cut out to bring peace and stability among the people and take the nation out of this unprecedented phase.
