India: The very first case of the XE variant of the Covid-19 virus in India has been reported from the city of Mumbai on Wednesday.

Additionally, a case of Kappa was also found from a sample collected from the city on the same day.

This has been reported by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) through a press release.

According to the report the patient with the XE variant is 50-year-old woman who had recently travelled to South Africa.

She tested positive for the virus early in March. However, she possessed no symptoms and has recovered now.

The XE variant was first detected in the United Kingdom.  It is said to be a mutant of the BA.1 and BA.2 variants of the Omicron strain.

According to the reports from the World Health Organization (WHO) it has 10 per cent more strength of transmission than the BA.2 mutant.

Apart from the UK, it has also been detected in the United States and China.

It has also been known that apart from the usual Covid symptoms like cold and cough, individuals with this variant might also experience heart problems, palpitation and nerve issues.

Although, the severity of the symptoms on patients depends on their vaccination status and the degree of the mutant.

WHO continues to closely monitor the developments in relation to this mutant.
