India/Lifestyle Desk: Northeast India region is poised to become the next global travel destination for Buddhist tourism. In the latest Indian union budget of 2026-27 its finance minister Nirmala Sitaraman outlined plans for a new Buddhist circuit scheme for the northeastern region.

Northeast India is replete with natural resources and is the home to several spiritual pilgrimage sites. Some of the major sites being Tawang Monastery, in Arunachal, Majuli in Assam, Unkoti in Tripura and Rumtek in Sikkim.

Despite its richness it has not been adequately explored in comparison to other parts of India like Bodh Gaya, Varanasi and the metro cities.  Therefore, to alter this situation the government plans to boost the tourism industry and transform it into a major travel destination with Buddhist tourism as a driving force.

In the light of this the government aims to preserve the spiritual sites in the region and make it tourist and travel friendly by improving transport infrastructure like roads, buses and rails; accommodation, and other facilities.

Northeast India has significant potential to become a major hub for international tourists from all corners of the world. If the scheme is executed effectively and marketed well, it could possibly transform its tourism market and immensely boost its local economy.

further boosting its local economy.
