Regional Desk: In a groundbreaking announcement, the gateway to the Northeast India – Guwahati, is set to become a 24-hour city. Its Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma declared that shops and business establishments in the city would be able to operate round the clock.

This was announced by the Chief Minister during a cabinet meet held in Dibrugarh, Assam. By reaffirming the same on social media, he said that the government had decided to extend the operating hours of shops and establishments in Guwahati, along with two other cities – Dibrugrah and Silchar.

He also said that this would be beneficial for the regional economy as it would boost employment opportunities and elevate consumer experience.

Regarding labour laws, he also clarified that no employee would be allowed to work beyond nine hours a day or 48 hours in a week.

However, this new modification would not be applicable for liquor shop, which would be allowed to operate only till 2 AM in the morning.

Guwahati, which is not just a capital city of Assam, India, but also the gateway to northeast India region. It is also regarded as an economic corridor for India and Southeast Asia. It is also a tourist city as people from all over the northeast converge here for economic, transport, and educational activities. Therefore, this new initiative would undoubtably favour the economy, and encourage local business. In fact, considering Guwahati’s prominence and recent infastructural and economic growth, it should have been a 24/7 city from much earlier

Although, in the recent years, Guwahati has also seen a rise in crime activities, with the law and order often failing to provide basic safety and security to its residents even during the normal day time. Thus, allowing business establishments to operate 24/7 would also has to be accompanied by robust security measures to ensure its success.
