Global Desk: National service like serving in the military and other public services could become compulsory in the United Kingdom if the conservative government retains power in the upcoming general elections.

In a recent announcement through a social media post, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak claimed that every 18-yr- old in the country will get an opportunity to serve the community through the national service involving armed forces or by volunteering for the National Health Service or the fire service.

Sunak assured that this will allow youngsters to give something back to the nation and build a sense of community within themselves. Besides, it would also help them in gaining valuable skills of life like leadership.

In one of his later social media posts, Sunak also said “You don’t have to go to university to succeed in life.”

Such mandatory services, especially in the military, is present in a number of countries. However, the question is how far this would be accepted in a nation like the UK. What if youngsters refuse to take part in such services? And would it be right to compel anyone to participate? The latest announcement has been met with mixed opinions.
