Mithali Raj announces retirement form international cricket

Sports Desk: Mithali Raj, the former Indian women cricketer and the skipper of the Indian team announced her retirement from all forms of the game at the international level on Wednesday.

Raj stated this through her social media platforms by posting a letter to officially announce her decision.

She said that her 23-year-old journey as a cricketer was filled with highs and lows, however it was the most ‘fulfilling, challenging and enjoyable’ years of her life which also helped her shape as a person along with women’s cricket in the country.

Mithali Raj also stated that it was the highest honour to play for India and she would always cherish the opportunity she got to represent the nation.

Regarding her decision to bring down the curtain on her cricketing career, she said that it was the right time to take the call as Indian women’s cricket is in capable hands and its future looks bright with the present band of young and talented players.

Furthermore, she also thanked the BCCI chief Jay Shah for the support she received over the years and her fans for all their love.

Additionally, Raj also mentioned that as a former cricketer she would love to stay connected with the game and help in contributing to the growth and development of women’s cricket in India and around the world.            

Born in Jodhpur, Rajasthan, the 39-year-old Mithali Raj has represented India in over 230 one day matches, 12 tests, and around 89 T20 internationals. Mostly she was a top-order batswoman for the team with her highest score being 125 in ODI and 214 in tests.

Meanwhile, a Bollywood biopic in honour of her her life and cricketing career titled “Shabaash Mithu” has also been made which is set to hit the screens on July 22.
