AI and Film Industry: Can AI-Generated actors qualify for the Oscars?

Art Desk: The impact of AI (Artificial Intelligence) is already being felt in the field of art, culture, including the film industry. Today, AI generated or robot characters can be created and make them to act like human actors. They can even be made to write film scripts and compose music. This is already happening and is going economically, technologically, and artistically revolutionize the film/media industry, and is bound to blur the line between real and machine generated art.

Recently, a film named As Deep as the Grave serves as an example of the use of AI in film production. In this film has drawn attention within both the filmgoers and technology enthusiasts for featuring an AI generated actor and a copy of late American actor Val Kilmer. This has definitely demonstrated new possibilities AI can generate in cinema, but it has also raised serious ethical concerns in using AI for artistic creations. It is set to blur the line between real and machine generated art.

However, the question that also arises now is that if machine generated actors and artistic works can also be honored like human actors in prestigious awards and film festivals like Academy Awards and Cannes? The answer is no!

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences that presents the Oscar Awards has clearly drawn the line! According to its new rules for the 99th Oscars in 2026 it said that only humans would be eligible for the honor and AI-generated actors and scripts would be banned form getting nominated for the awards.

It also stated that AI technology can however be used for production purposes like putting special effects, GFX, or video editing. However, AI made actors or script writers cannot receive the same admiration for artistic brilliance like real or human artists. Moreover, it can reserve the right to request more information on the nature of the use of human authorship.
