Newspapers in Kashmir print black pages in protest

Global Desk/India: Several leading newspapers in Kashmir, India have printed black front pages on 23 April 2025. Prominent English language newspapers including Rising Kashmir and Greater Kashmir made their front pages black.

The newspapers in Kashmir expressed their protests and condemnation through this in response to the recent terror attack in the Pahalgam region of Kashmir where over 27 tourists have been shot dead. The tourists hailed from several parts of India. It also comprised a few foreign nationals, reports Rising Kashmir.

The gunmen have not been nabbed yet and are being hunted by the Indian authorities. Reports reveal that the group is linked to a terror outfit from the neighbouring country. Sketches of their faces were also seen circulating across the media and social media platforms.

The newspaper Greater Kashmir has labelled the massacre as ‘Gruesome’. Its front story headline was printed as, “GRUSOME: Kashmir Gutted, Kashmiris Grieving.”

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was in Saudia Arabia during the time of the attack has strongly conveyed his condolences. “Those behind this heinous act will be brought to justice…they will not be spared! Their evil agenda will never succeed. Our resolve to fight terrorism is unshakable and it will get even stronger,” he stated on social media.

This incident has stirred an atmosphere of horror and terror across Kashmir. It has also sparked anger throughout India, with may many protesting across the length and breadth of the country.

Leaders around the globe have also condemned the attack. Voicing his deepest sympathies, US President Donald Trump wrote in Truth Social that the incredible people of India have US’s full support.

Terror attacks in Kashmir are ongoing for a long time, yet governments over the years has somehow not managed to find a long-term remedy. What happened in Pahalgam is horrendous, horrific, and disturbing. The perpetrators should be made to pay for their action. However, the incident has also raised several question marks on the preparedness to ensure public safety in such tourist spots located near the boarder country. It also exposes a significant failure of Indian intelligence and security.
