Sci-Tech Desk: The UK government is set to take its first step to counter the growing threat of AI deepfake images. Recently its Ministry of Justice announced that the creation of sexually explicit deepfake images would soon be classified as a criminal offence. Concerning this, anyone generating deepfake images, whether intentionally or unintentionally, and without consent could face criminal charges, unlimited fine, or even imprisonment, reports the Guardian.
Previously, under the Online Safety Act, sharing of deepfake intimate images was already criminalized. However, the new law is likely to be introduced in the parliament with an amendment in the criminal justice bill.
In today’s rapidly evolving AI driven world, distinguishing between real and fake is increasingly becoming blurred. AI powered mechanisms like deepfakes have become a growing issue, that is seriously harming individual privacy, especially the dignity of women. AI generated outputs aimed at harming or humiliating someone should undoubtedly be treated with contempt. If it is not dealt with early, it could lead to catastrophic consequences for the global community. Every country should make such deepfake a punishable offence.
