Sunil Chhetri, the football icon who rose to the top, despite systematic challenges in India

Sports Desk: World’s third highest goal scorer Sunil Chhetri has finally hung his boots. The legendary Indian footballer played his last match in Kolkata against Kuwait in the World Cup Qualifiers.

He began his footballing career by playing for the Mohan Bagan football club in 2002, 39-year-old Chhetri went on to represent India and many other top clubs in the country like East Bengal, Dempo, Bengaluru FC, and more.

As a forward player, Chhetri has represented India in 151 international matches and scored 94 goals for the Blue Tigers.

Chhetri is known for his intrepid goal scoring and leadership skills. He is widely considered as one of the greatest legends of his generation and a leading face of the Indian sub-continental football.

Born in Secunderabad, India, Sunil Chheetri is also the third highest goal scorer in the world after legends Ronaldo and Messi.

Apart from his goal scoring skills, Chhetri is also known for his intellectual calibre. He is frequently spotted as a lead television panelist, motivational speaker, and as judge at beauty pageants.

His momentous career has left an indelible mark in the Indian football. Chhetri dedicated himself completely to his nation and inspired young footballers to dream big. Unfortunately, India and its footballing system and infrastructure may not have been the right place to nurture a player of Chhetri’s calibre. Hope that the future generation will carry forward his legacy and fulfil his unfulfilled dream of seeing India play at the FIFA World Cup one day.
