India gets its new parliament building, opposition boycotts inauguration

India: On Sunday, May 28, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the new parliament building in the national capital New Delhi.

Dressed in traditional attire, PM Modi inaugurated the new premises with spiritual ceremonies, including the performing of “Ganpati Homan” to invoke the blessings of God.

Besides, he also installed the historically significant sceptre “Sengol” – which symbolizes the transfer of power to independent India from British rule on 14 August 1947 – during the occasion.

Several dignitaries, spiritual leaders, party members, and public representatives were present on the inauguration ceremony.

Narendra Modi said, “The new parliament is a reflection of the aspirations of New India.”

At the same time, many opposition political parties, including the Congress boycotted the inauguration ceremony. Congress expressed its unhappiness with PM Modi inaugurating the new parliament instead of the President.

Rahul Gandhi in a tweet even said that Prime Minister Modi is treating the inauguration as a ‘coronation’.

BJP on the other hand stated that the opposition’s boycott from the event is their disrespect to democracy.

Notably, the inauguration of the new parliament building coincided with the birth anniversary of renowned freedom fighter and Hindu nationalist leader Vir Savarkar.
