Mumbai grabs the maiden WPL

Sports Desk: The Mumbai Indians have won the maiden WPL (Women’s Premier League) on Sunday.

India captain Harmanpreet Kaur led Mumbai Indians outclassed Delhi Capitals challenge on the final match played in Mumbai.

By batting first Delhi Capitals set a target of 131/9. The grand finale went on thill the last over and Mumbai managed to secure the target in the 20th over with three balls stills left.

English right handed batswoman Nat Sciver-Brunt was declared the player of the match for her unbeaten run of 60 in 55 deliveries.

This also brought down the curtains of the first ever women’s IPL conducted by the BCCI. The inaugural tournament comprised of five teams with a mix of Indian and overseas players from different cricketing nations.

The Mumbai Indians team is owned by Reliance Industries, while the Delhi Capitals is jointly owned by GMR Group and JSW Group. Besides, the main sponsor of the tournament was India’s TATA group.

Following the victory, BCCI secretary Jay Shah, who was also present in the stadium, congratulated Mumbi for winning the inaugural tournament and said that TATA WPL “has redefined women’s sport and inspired millions of girls”.

The men’s IPL is one of the richest sports leagues in the world ahead of English Premier League and other top brands. The format of the WPL was quiet different than IPL in terms of teams and venues. Therefore, how successful WPL will become in the future and if would be able to match its men’s version would be worth watching.
