Sci-Tech Desk: How did the pandemic actually begin and what is its original source is still a mystery. Whether it begin from a human or an animal is unclear. However, a latest study carried out by a group of international researchers suggest that the pandemic might have originated from a racoon dog sold in the seafood market in Wuhan, China.
According to a recent report from the New York Times this was found after the researchers examined the swabs collected from walls, floors, cages, and carts where animals were kept in the Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market in Wuhan. The swabs were taken after the market was shut down after the outbreak of the virus.
The result of the investigation concluded that some of the swabs that were positive of the virus were the ones that carried animals like raccoon dogs, which are fox like dogs usually found in East Asia.
In view of this, researchers believe that raccoon dogs were infected in the Wuhan market. However, it does not also mean that raccoon dogs were the originators of the virus and transmitted it to humans in the market. In fact, it could be other way around, as humans could have caught the virus from somewhere else and transmitted it to raccoon dogs in Wuhan.
The same is little complicated and will need further research dig deeper in to matter. Although, through this research it outlines a strong evidence that the animals in the market were infected and Wuhan seafood market where diverse breeds of animals were sold for human consumption was the epicentre of this pandemic that had brought this world to a standstill.
