Sci-Tech Desk: Is any disease deadlier than cancer? According to a new report of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Climate Impact Lab, climate change can be a bigger threat to human health than cancer.
The impact generated by climate change – for which people themselves are responsible through their daily activities and the excess use of energy and resources – can be twice as deadly as cancer.
The emissions of CO2 and other toxic gases form vehicles, industries, domestic energy consumption which leads to poisonous pollution and temperature rise can gravely affect human health and further exacerbate diseases like cancer, cardiovascular problems, skin defects in addition to temperature rise and natural disasters.
The report from UNDP as reported by UN News also demonstrated an example of Bangladesh. In this it estimated that the result of high emissions from fossil fuels in this densely populated country could result in death of twice as many people by the year 2100 compared to its annual death rate at present. Additionally, it could also increase casualties from road accidents ten times more than it is now.
Similar outcomes will also be observed in other parts of the world. Therefore, the only solution to save ourselves from this destruction it is through concentrated and urgent action of responsible use of energy and change in daily habits.
