Dr Prabin Chandra Das, a noted folklorist of national standing, besides being a professor of Folklore, Gauhati University, has breathed his last today at 1PM on 4th September 2022.
Dr Das, hailing from Assam’s Hajo, had a brilliant career all through. He was initially a lecturer in Saint Edmunds College, Shillong. Subsequently, he joined the department of Folklore Research, Gauhati University. In that capacity he was also the director of NSS, and secretary of university classes. Dr Das has authored a number of books on folk studies, both in Assamese and English.
He collapsed while delivering a speech in the auditorium of Nagaon Girls College, and brought to Guwahati City Heart Hospital. After spending about ten days in the intensive care unit of the hospital he breathed his last. Assam has lost a great folklorist of national standing.
His cremation at Bhootnath crematorium, Guwahati, is attended by a galaxy of students and scholars from across different areas of social life. In every conflicting situation, Dr Das was always with the students, and resultantly often earned the ire of the university authority. At the time of his death he was 82, leaving behind two sons – one of them working for the TV channel Times Now.
His autobiography has been serially published in the pages of the Assamese literary journal – Goriyashi.
