Global Desk: Amidst the economic crisis in Sri Lanka, thousands of anti-government agitators in the country stormed inside the official residence of the President Gotabaya Rajapaksa on Saturday.
As reported by the local media of Sri Lanka, the mob of protesters bombarded inside the President’s residence. They were carrying Sri Lankan flags and chanting anti-government slogans, demanding the resignations of the President and the newly appointed Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.
Viral videos circulating across social media also show protesters entering the private rooms of the president and using the beds, furniture, and swimming pool inside the complex.
Local reports also say that the police fired tear gas and water cannons during the protests held in parts of Colombo but failed to subdue the crowd. Over 30 people have also been reported to be injured during the protests.
The main opposition party Samagi Jana Balawegaya have also demanded the resignation of the President and the Prime Minister for failing to adequately handle the ongoing crisis.
Meanwhile, in prior anticipation of the protests, President Wickremesinghe is said to have fled from the residence in advance. A video in social media also show his luggage being boarded in a naval ship before the protests. His whereabouts is still unknown.
After failing to repay debts borrowed from foreign countries, Sri Lanka is facing its worst economic crisis since its independence. Due to this the supply of essential commodities like food, fuel, medicine, and others have stopped making the lives of it citizens further difficult.
