UK PM Boris Johnson resigns as the leader of Conservatives

Global Desk: UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced his resignation as the leader of the Conservative Party on Thursday.

Johnson was forced to take this decision after around 59 leaders from the party including key cabinet ministers submitted their resignation in one fell swoop within the last three days, citing dissatisfaction over Johnson’s credibility as a leader.

The resigned ministers include the former Chancellor to the Exchequer Rishi Sunak, former health Secretary Sajid Javid, former Home Secretary Priti Patel, former Deputy Prime Minister Dominic Raab, among others.

Owing to the large number of resignations, Johnson finally took the decision to quit as the leader of the Conservatives and announced about the same through a press conference at the 10 Downing Street.

Speaking on the occasion, Johnson thanked the people of the nation who voted for the Conservatives and reposed faith on him to lead the country.

Johnson also highlighted some of the major achievements of his government like the handling of the COVID crisis, Ukraine war, Brexit, and others.

Johnson however also informed that he would continue to serve as the interim Prime Minister until his successor is chosen.

Boris Johnson served as the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 2019. Recently, he came in the line of fire after his controversial involvement in the ‘partygate’ scandal where he and his colleagues from the Conservatives were engaged in a get-together during the time of the first lockdown.

Alternatively, the rising cost of living within the country and his inability to maintain economic stability has also led to a division within his cabinet members and the Conservative party.

Interestingly, a few weeks back the majority of the Torey leaders had voted for Johnson during the no confidence motion in the House of Commons.

With this, Johnson has become the third Prime Minister in UK since 2016 to have reigned from the post after David Cameron and Theresa May.
