India: The by-election results for three Lok Sabha and seven state assembly seats were declared on Sunday by the Election Commission of India.
In Uttar Pradesh, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won the Rampur and Azamgarh Lok Sabha seats. Azamgarh was considered to be a Samajwadi Party stronghold.
In the national capital New Delhi, Aam Admi Party (AAP) candidate Durgesh Pathak defeated the BJP candidate by over 11,0000 votes, according to media reports.
However, in Punjab where AAP recently came to power, its candidate from CM Bhagwant Mann’s stronghold Sangrur Lok Sabha constituency was defeated by Akali Dal nominee Simranjit Singh Mann by over 7000 votes.
In the northeast in Tripura where four assembly constituencies went to the polls, BJP won three seats, while the Congress managed to win one. Tripura’s new Chief Minister Manik Saha won in the Town Bardowali constituency.
Additionally, in the state of Andhra Pradesh, the ruling YSR Congress party got a landslide victory in the assembly seat from the Atmakur constituency.
Meanwhile, in Jharkhand Shilpa Neha Tirkey of the Congress won by a margin of around 23690 votes over BJP’s Gangotri Kujur from the Mandar constituency.
The bi-elections were held on 23rd June.
