Google Translate adds Assamese & seven other Indian languages

National Desk: Google Translate has finally added Assamese and seven other native Indian languages among the 24 new inclusions in its platform.

In addition to Assamese, languages like Sanskrit, Bhojpuri, Dogri, Konkani, Maithili, Meiteilon (Manipuri), and Mizo have also been added on the platform.

Expressing his joy on the occasion, the Chief Minister of Assam Himanta Biswa Sarma said that he is delighted for the addition of the Assamese language along with the other native Indian languages in the translation tool.

He also added that this will popularize Assamese across digital platforms and promote more research on this ‘beautiful language’.

“Delighted that @Google has added Assamese in its language translation tool among the 24 new languages incorporated, 8 of which are native to India. This will promote more research on the beautiful language & popularise its use across digital platforms,” he stated.

Assamese, which is an Indo-Aryan language from the state of Assam and north eastern part of India, is spoken by about 25 million people.

Following this, the Assamese language users will now be able to directly translate any script written in the language to the other languages present in the platform like English or French and vice versa.

Until present, they had to face problems in translating scripts in other languages to Assamese due to its absence in the platform. Due to this, they often had to rely on other similar languages like Bangla or Hindi for the matter. However, with its inclusion now, people will be able to translate other languages to Assamese.

Apart from these eight Indian languages, 16 other languages from different parts of the world has also been added.

This takes the total number of languages in the platform to 133.
