Global Desk: The ongoing crisis in Sri Lanka began after the Covid pandemic disrupted its economy by affecting its key revenue sources like the tourism.

This led to high rise in debt and forced the government to ban the import of foreign goods. With the situation going from bad to worse, the Sri Lankan PM Mahinda Rajapaksa tendered his resignation on 10th May.

The country carried out massive protests against the government. An MP from the ruling party was also killed during the violence. As a result, complete curfew and lockdown was imposed in the country to control the situation. Police also fired tear gas and water cannon on the protesters.

Earlier, former Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa had said “our general public to exercise restraint & remember that violence only begets violence. The economic crisis we’re in needs an economic solution which this administration is committed to resolving.” He stated this during a Twitter post.

A state of emergency was declared within the country to stop the anti-government protesters. This granted the military the power to arrest and detain them.

The protesters want the entire Rajapaksa family to quit politics amidst this crisis.

This gives us an insight into how a decision in choosing a government can impact short term and long run sustainability.
