BJP dominates in Guwahati Municipality elections; AAP & AJP win one seat each; Congress fails to open account

Regional Desk, Guwahati: The results of the Guwahati municipality (GMC) elections were declared on Sunday.

As expected, the Bharatya Janata Party (BJP) emerged as the winner by clinching most of the 57 seats that went for the polls.

Additionally, it also won in three seats without contesting as there were no candidates from opposition parties.

The Aam Admi Party (AAP) and Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP), who contested their first municipal election won one seat each.

AAP candidate Masuma Begum emerged victories from the ward number 42 seat.

Similarly, Hukum Chand Ali Bakshi won from the ward number 1 by defeating the BJP-AGP alliance candidate form the seat.

Meanwhile, the candidates from the main opposition Congress failed to win any seat.

Responding to the results, Chief minister of Assam Himanta Biswa Sarma thanked the people of Guwahati for repositing confidence on BJP and its allies in the municipality elections.

Further, he also added that this massive mandate proves that people have reaffirmed their faith towards the developmental initiative of BJP under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“I bow my head to the people of Guwahati for giving @BJP4Assam & its allies a historic win in #GMCElections. With this massive mandate, people have reaffirmed their faith on our development journey under the guidance of Adarniya PM Shri @narendramodi ji,” he said in a Tweet.

The Guwahati municipality elections which took place on Friday happened after a gap of nine years.

The counting of the same began on Sunday morning at the Maniram Dewan Trade Centre in the city.
