Rajya Sabha Elections – Some Queer Stories

Editor’s Desk, 02 April, 2022: Rajya Sabha, the so-called upper house of the parliament, is important on different counts. Upper house, as envisaged by the makers of the constitution, was built up as the house for some select and sensible section of members for the guidance of the lower house. For that matter, the President of India is also empowered by the constitution to nominate twelve distinguished people in national life as members of the Rajya Sabha, that is constituted to give sensible advice to the government. That noble objective has failed under our political situation. Often persons, getting defeated in the assembly or parliamentary election, are sent to the Rajya Sabha. Some of the members of the Rajya sabha are seen to remain silent for six years, but despite their silence and inaction they use to get all the benefits at the cost of the people. One of the members to this upper house, getting nominated by the President of India, is reported to attend the parliament only for five or six days, but the member received lakhs of rupees for being a member. The situation of this kind has misfired. We should have a detailed and serious discussion about the desired worth of the upper house. It is also equally true that some of the members of the upper house have brought in glory tour parliamentary system.
