Global Desk, 20 March, 2022: The President of war-ravaged Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky’s name is being nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize this year.
A number of European political leaders wants to put forward Zelensky’s name for the honour.
Even though the deadline for the nomination had already ended in February, Zelensky’s supporters from different European countries has asked the committee that handles the Nobel Peace Prize to reopen and extend the same so that Zelensky’s name can be included.
According to reports around 35 leaders from Europe has signed a letter in support of Zelensky. It also includes the former prime ministers of Belgium and Estonia.
The Nobel Peace Prize is always awarded by a specialized committee which is elected by the parliament of Norway.
In 2021 this honour was given to Maria Ressa and Dmitry Muratov.
In the past, Mother Teresa and Kailash Satyarthi were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize from India.
Mahatma Gandhi had to been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize on multiple occasions, however he was never honoured which this award.
