Editor’s Desk: Guwahati city is known for heavy flood water during the monsoon. Many roads and pathways remain under water. Many vehicles get stuck under watery road. Back home, he or she does not find a glass of water to drink. That is, potable water is some very especial in the greatest gate-way city of Guwahati. Thirty years ago, the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) had the provision of only ten thousand to fifteen thousand taxpayers of the city. To the population growth in the city has become phenomenal, virtually outside the logistic grip of the census authority. The Municipal Authority finds itself helpless for lack of funding for the renovation of the water supply scheme. Most of the municipal pumps, working hitherto, are lying non-functional. This has multiplied the woes of the residents of Guwahati several fold. Some years back the state government has taken a project with the financial assistance from an organization from outside India. That project has also misfired midway. Meanwhile, the state government has constituted an organization named Guwahati Jal Board, as we do have in a city like New Delhi. The work of the Jal Board is yet to be fully started. At Guwahati every tax-payer has to pay at least Rs 5000 for potable water. The situation has generated private water supply business. The government of Assam is expected to take special step for the earliest activation of the project for potable water to the taxpayers.
