Teenagers banned from using social media in Australia
Sci-tech Desk: Children under 16 will no longer be able to use social media in Australia. It has become the first country in the world to pass a new legislation that would ban teenagers from using social media.
In its justification, the government claimed that the ban was necessary to protect youngsters’ wellbeing and mental health. By sharing a video on social media from a speech made in the Australian parliament, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese made it clear that the government was setting a minimum age of 16 and a new community standard for social media use.
He also said that social media companies had a social responsibility, and the government was on the side of all the parents who were worried about their children’s wellbeing, confidence, and their sense of self.
In this era when social media platforms like Instagram and Facebook are widely popular among teenagers, this law has become the first of its kind. However, the new law would only be implemented by the end of 2025, reports ABC News.
