Global Desk: Mpox has been declared as global health emergency by the World Health Organization – WHO.
According to WHO website, its Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus states that the upsurge of cases in several African countries, especially Congo is a global concern and constitute an international public health emergency.
Tedros also says that the rapid spread of the virus and reporting cases in Africa is worrying and in order to save lives and stop it from becoming a global pandemic, it requires coordinated response from the international community.
He also states that significant efforts are underway with close collaboration with communities and governments to curb the outbreak.
In a social media post the WHO Director also confirmed the spread of the virus outside Africa, with the first case being reported from Sweden.
He has encouraged to enhance ‘surveillance, share data, and work to better understand the transmission.’
Mpox, which is also known as Monkeypox is a flu like disease that spreads through close contact with someone infected. The symptoms include fever, headache, muscle aches, rashes, swollen glands, joint pain, and so forth.
The global community has just bounced back from a pandemic that has killed thousands across the world. The outbreak of this Mpox virus needs to be dealt with seriousness to prevent another deadly pandemic which would be catastrophic.
