Will AI replace journalists? Italian newspaper publishes world’s first AI edition

Sci-Tech Desk: AI is replacing many things including journalists now. An Italian newspaper named Il Foglio has become the first newspaper in the world to publish a fully AI generated edition.

On March 18, Il Foglio posted on social media with the picture of the front page of the newspaper, stating that it had it was the first newspaper in the world made with artificial intelligence.

Through an AI written press release, Il Foglio also stated that it had used AI for everything in the newspaper, starting from writing the headlines, quotes, captions, summaries, and even the irony.

It also said that AI version would be more optimistic than the traditional Foglio. The four page long edition would be available five days a week. It will comprise of both news articles as well as opinion pieces, with 22 articles and four editorials in each publication. Apart from the printed edition, the AI sheet is also available in the official website of Il Foglio.

Il Foglio also mentioned that it is an experiential initiative of Il Foglio for a month where it would investigate the potential of journalism through AI.

AI has already turned worldwide attention. Although, its involvement in journalism is not new. In the recent times several aspects of AI like robotic news anchors have already been experimented with by several news organizations. However, this is the first time it has been implemented in print media, by publishing the first totally AI generated newspaper edition, which can definitely regarded as a watershed moment for the journalistic industry. However, its long-term success is dependent on its ability in upholding the basic journalistic principles like ethics, objectivity, and accuracy.
