First woman to lead the Olympic movement in its 131-year history! Kirsty Coventry elected as IOC president
Sports Desk: For the first time in its 131-year history, the Olympic Games is finally set to be led by a woman. Kirsty Coventry has become the first woman to be elected as the president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
Coventry, who hails from Zimbabwe has also achieved the rare feat of becoming the first African to lead the coveted world sports body.
Besides, 41-year-old Kirsty Coventry, who herself is a former swimmer also becomes the youngest individual to lead the most powerful global sporting body.
Thanking her voters and the fellow candidates, Coventry said that winning the IOC election was an extraordinary moment, as a nine-year-old girl she had never though she would be standing there one day.
She also said that it was a reminder of her commitment to lead the organization with so much pride with the values at the core and make everyone proud.
Upon becoming the first woman and the first African to lead the Olympic movement, she said that it was a powerful signal that is truly global and affirmed that the IOC has evolved as a truly open and diverse organization and pledged to continue this path for the next eight years.
