Legendary Indian tabla player Zakir Hussain passes away

Art Desk: Legendary tabla player Ustad Zakir Hussain passed away at 73 on Sunday, 15 December.

The musical maestro who had won millions of hearts with his extraordinary talent, reportedly suffered a heart-related ailment and was admitted in a hospital in the United States in a serious condition.

Hussain, who was born in Mumbai, made a significant contribution in popularizing Indian classical music across the globe.

During his musical career he won several national and international accolades, including four Grammy awards, Sangeet Natak Academy award of India, and the National Endowment for the Arts’ National Heritage Fellowship, which is one of the highest awards given in the United States.

During a 1980 BBC interview, Zakir Hussain said that he had started playing tabla when he was just two years old. Besides playing the tabla, he was also a music composer, percussionist, and a film actor.

Hussain’s divine musical talent has let an indelible mark in the world of music. It is rare to find a talent like him in today’s era of digitization and AI, where young musicians crave for instant popularity and stardom over consistent dedication and sadhana with music.
