India: The results of the state assembly results of the wealthiest state in India Maharashtra was announced on Saturday, 23 November. The Mahayuti alliance, which is an alliance of the ruling Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP), Shiv Sena, and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) secured a resounding and comfortable victory over the opposition comprising of the Indian National Congress, NCPSP, and Shiv Sena (UBT), which together formed the Maha Vikas Agadhi (MVA) alliance.

As per the final results declared in the Election Commission of India website, the three major parties of the ruling Mahayuti alliance grabbed seats, with 132 of BJP, 57 of Shiv Sena, and 41 of NCP.

On the other hand, the three major parties of the opposition MVA could manage to secure only 46 seats, with Congress winning 16, Shiv Sena (UBT) – 20, and NCPSP – 10.

Even though, the BJP led alliance already has a majority beyond the minimum requirements and expectations, it has also won substantial number of seats independently, which might also possibly allow them to form the government on its own if invited by the state’s governor.

This victory means, the Narendra Modi’s BJP led alliance will rule the richest state and the city in India. Maharashtra is also the home of its financial capital, Mumbai. As the commercial powerhouse of the country, Maharashtra plays a pivotal role in driving the economic growth and overall development of India. Therefore, the political parties also consider it as a crucial state for their own political and financial influence.

These results have again highlighted the flaws of the exit polls predicted by the pollster and the media organizations. Although, most of them have forecasted a BJP win, the margin of difference between the winners and the losers was far higher, and the final results also indicate that the election was a one-sided affair.

While the BJP leaders have attributed the success to the exemplary work and vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the developmental initiatives of the incumbent government in the state, the opposition leaders feel that the results were unexpected and hard to believe.
