Is social media platform Bluesky replacing X?
Business Desk: New social media platform Bluesky has been gaining popularity as a social media platform, and is likely become a possible alternative to X. Over one million new users have joined Blusky since the presidential elections in the US, and microblogging site X has been witnessing a significant exodus of users after Elon Musk’s acquisition.
Bluesky, which is owned by former Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey, has in recent months gained over one million users worldwide. This is a surge from 9 million in September, 2024, reports The Standard. These users also include several musicians, journalists, filmmakers, politicians, and media organizations like Taylor Swift, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, The Guardian, The Times, and more.
Reports also suggest that the migration from X to Bluesky has been largely from the users from North America and the UK, and the reason behind this social media influx is the promotion of political propaganda during the US Elections, presence of misinformation and hate speech, and its acquisition by Elon Musk’s unwavering endorsement of Republican candidate Donald Trump in the platform.
Bluesky is very much similar to X in its features as both are microblogging sites. However, unlike X, Bluesky aims to offer its users the ability to better personalize their content consumption experiences by controlling their feeds and keeping forced and recommended feeds at the bay.
X, formally known as Twitter, has definitely lost its shine in the recent times due to numerous factors like the rise of misinformation, fake news, botted profiles, change in the features in the platforms itself, and its acquisition by world’s richest man Elon Musk. Given its loss of trust as a brand, emerging social media platforms like Bluesky could pose a serious challenge to X and translate into a viable alternative for microblogging users unsatisfied with X.
