Indian doctors strike nationwide for women’s safety

Global/India Desk: Indian doctors have begun a massive strike across the country protesting the murder of female doctor in a hospital in Kolkata.

The nationwide protest has taken place after a female doctor was reportedly assaulted and murdered while she was in an overnight duty in the RG Kar hospital in Kolkata.

Reacting to the incident, the Indian Medical Association (IMA), which is a representative voluntary organization of doctors in India, has called for a 24-hour national strike during from 17 to 18 August, 2024.

In a press release shared in its official social media account the IMA sated that the incident was a ‘crime of barbaric scale due to the lack of safe spaces for women and the hooliganism that is unleashed due to the lack of an organized security protocol’.

It also stated that the crime has shocked the conscience of the nation and both the medical fraternity, and the nation are victims.

The IMA also enumerated its demands and solutions through the press release. Among others, it has demanded to improve the security protocols of all hospitals with the deployment of CCTVs and security personals, improvement of living and working conditions of resident doctors, meticulous and professional investigation of the crime, appropriate compensation to the bereaved family.

As part of the strike all medical services except emergencies and casualties has been withdrawn resulting in a standstill in medical services across India.

This heinous and inhuman incident has shocked the entire world and reignited the issue of women’s safety. India recently celebrated its 78th Independence Day, however, the nation’s women are yet to enjoy freedom of working, travelling, and living without fear.
