UK: Keir Starmer wins, Sunak says ‘sorry’, can Labour bring Britain back on track?
Global Desk: The Labour Party led by Sir Keir Starmer have won the UK General Elections with a landslide majority. Out of 650 seats in the lower house, it has acquired 412 seats with over 33 percent vote share. It has also won 221 more seats than the previous election in 2019.
The incumbent Conservatives headed by Rishi Sunak could manage to win only 121 seats, with a vote share of 23.7 percent. While the Labours have gained 211 more seats with a vote share of 33.8 percent, the Toris have been stripped of 251 seats and lost a number of incumbent cabinet ministers in its key bastions.
Sir Starmer will hold the keys to the 10 Downing Street for the first time after Tony Blair came to power in 2007. Although, the margin of victory is far larger this time handing the biggest defeat to the Toris in its history.
Following the result, Starmer met the King and accepted his invitation to form the new government. In his first speech in front of the PM’s residence he pledged to transform Britain and said that the work of change begins now. He also asserted that public service was a privilege and every person in the country should be treated with respect.
Starmer was accompanied with his wife Victoria, who now will be the first lady of Britain.
Earlier, Rishi Sunak conceded defeat and handed his resignation to the King. In his last speech as the youngest and the first Indian Hindu Prime Minister, he took the responsibility of the verdict and said he was sorry. He also said that he was proud of his achievements and the country was ‘safer, stronger and secure then it was 20 months back’.
By urging everyone to hold the true British ideals of kindness, decency and tolerance, he said that one of the remarkable things about Britain is how remarkable it is that he could become its Prime Minister and see his two daughters light Diwali candles in front of the Downing Street after two generations of his grandparents came to UK with little.
After 14 years of Conservatives rule with frequent change in leadership, Britain is today facing its worst economic crisis ever. High cost of living, inflation, unemployment, hiked taxes, NHS in doldrums, illegal immigration, have crippled the nation. Definitely, Sunk had a very little time in office to address all these problems that began after the Covid lockdowns, even though he affirmed that things had slowly started improving. However, with the change in government now and Labour getting a strong mandate, Starmer’s task would be to keep his words and bring Britain back on track, even though the Conservatives always believed that Labour never demonstrated any clear plan to fix all the problems. Therefore, it would be worth observing how Starmer does things differently and leads the nation back on its track. Will he be able to fulfil his promises of change or will this trend of hopelessness continue further. Where is Britain now headed to? A massive challenge lies ahead of Sir Keir Starmer and the new Labour government.
