Indian election commences, Modi urges youths to vote in large numbers

India: The voting for the Indian general election has officially began. On Friday, 20 April, the first phase of the voting was held across the country.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a tweet stated that votes were casted for 102 seats across 21 states and Union Territories.

All the seats of the southern state of Tamil Nadu went for the polls today. While in the northeastern state of Assam the faith of 5 constituencies were decided today. Votes will be casted in multiple phases across different states.

According to state owned broadcaster DD India, the nation saw over 60 per cent of voter turnout with voters from all walks of life casting their votes. In a social media post it also stated that voting was held peacefully.

In his social media post Prime Minister Modi also stated that ‘every vote counts, and every voice matters,’ and urged the youngsters, particularly the first time voters to vote in large numbers.
