India: Why India’s Electronic Voting Machines are under the scanner just at the backdrop of elections? Just two days before the first phase of voting in India, the EVMs were observed to have encountered a serious malfunction.

According to media reports, EVMs registered extra votes in favour of a particular political party. This has been said to be detected during a mock polling at a location in the state of Karela. Some leaders form the opposition parties in the state have forwarded their complaints to the concerned authority after alleging this glitch.

The matter has also reached the Supreme Court. The Election Commission of India has been asked by the court to look into the matter.

If the news regarding EVM malfunction is true, then this will pose a serious question mark not on the credibility of the EVS, but it will pose a serious threat to the integrity of the election ecosystem.
