Britain to take radical steps to save youngsters from smoking
Lifestyle Desk: Britain is set to completely eradicate the toxic addiction of smoking among its young generation. It is aiming to prevent them from ever buying a cigarette.
The Rishi Sunak led Conservative government proposed this new anti-smoking initiative in the Conservative Party conference held recently.
While speaking at the conference, Sunak stated that if this plan turns into a law than a 14-year-old of today can never be sold a cigarette.
By asserting about this plan on social media platform X, Sunak also said that he wants to make Britain a smoke free nation as it is the “number one preventable cause of ill health causing 64,000 deaths a year in England.”
He also added that “four out of five smokers start at the age of 20” and this puts a huge burden on its national health service and costs the nation 17 billion pounds each year.
The Prime Minister also added that smoking will not however be criminalized, neither anyone who can legally buy a cigarette will be prevented from doing so.
Moreover, in addition to cigarette the habit of vaping among the youngsters is also a cause of concern, said Sunak. Considering this, the government will also take steps to discourage this by taking preventable steps and restrict its availability, he added.
Whether its Britain or India, smoking is one of the most venomous habits among the young generation today. It is one of the key causes of many deadly ailments like cancer, stroke, and lung problems. Any step taken by the governments to discourage its use and access is laudatory. Children should also be educated in school about its harmful effects and how it can jeopardize their entire life. Besides, its promotion and display through media platforms like film and television should also be disallowed.
