Climate Desk: The Assam government has taken a new step in tackling the pressing issue of climate change with the ban of single-use plastic within the state.
As stated by the state authority, single use plastic, including water bottles below one litre will be banned in the state. The same is set to be implemented from October 2023.
The local authorities took this decisive step during a cabinet meeting held recently, which was led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
Plastic, which is a short word for Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) is one of the biggest source of many forms of pollution from land to water pollution. It is a non-degradable material which can last in the environment for years after it is disposed or thrown away or burnt. It can emit toxic greenhouse gases like CO2 methene, ethylene, and others.
Plastic is definitely easier to carry anything, however, people’s irresponsible behaviours like not reusing it or not throwing it at the appropriate place is one of the key causes of water logging and urban flood. Assam’s capital Guwahati is one of the glaring examples in this regard.
Therefore, apart from governments’ proactive steps in regulating the use of plastic, peoples’ habits in using and recycling it will be far more significant in restricting plastic’s menace within the environment.
