Business Desk: Subscribers using Netflix will have to pay extra charges if they share their passwords with friends or family.
On Tuesday, 23 May, Netflix in the United Kingdom and some other countries started sending emails to its subscribers stating that they will have to pay extra if they share their accounts with others.
A report from Sky News stated that in the email the streaming giant has sent this email whose accounts are being used ‘outside their household’.
Apart from the UK, the report suggests that Netflix has also sent emails about this new rule to few other European nations along with countries like Australia, US, Brazil, Singapore, and Mexico.
As per the new rule, subscribers can add a user to their account and pay an extra charge in addition to their monthly subscription fees. UK subscribers have to pay 499 pounds for this.
Netflix have reportedly taken this decision in light of the decreasing subscriber base followed by the pandemic. Besides, price rise and economic slowdown in countries like UK has been cited as the leading factor behind this, due to which the streaming platform has been losing on its usual revenue.
Moreover, allowing subscribers to share passwords meant that they failed to acquire new customers leading to loss in customer acquisition revenue.
