Without press freedom there is no human rights, says UNESCO on World Press Day
Global Desk: World Press Freedom Day is being observed across the journalistic community on Wednesday. Also known as World Press Day, it is annually observed on 3 May every year by UNESCO to promote and generate awareness on journalistic freedom and principles of free press.
UNESCO also celebrates this day by inviting journalists and media professionals from around the world to engage in discussions on the present status of press freedom in the world and address the challenges and possible solutions for a free press and a free society.
On view of this special day, journalists worldwide took on social media platforms to express their views on freedom of expression.
UNESCO in a Twitter post stated that free press is equal to a free society.
Similarly, in another tweet it wrote that “if everything is alright in the news, something must be wrong with journalism. Without press freedom, there are no #HumanRights. Freedom of speech underpins the protection of all other rights.”
Meanwhile, UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay urged the world leaders to protect free and independent journalism. “Freedom of expression is something that reveals the state of our societies,” she said.
