FC Barcelona players travel by train for a match to address climate change
Climate Desk: The football industry has started taking pragmatic actions on climate change. Recently, the male team of the FC Barcelona chose the railway over air for a short distance travel for a match against Getafe CF in the outskirts of Spain’s capital Madrid.
According to a report from Yahoo Finance, the club did so to contribute their bit to climate action and minimize their impact on global warming. It is also the very first occasion when the team travelled to work in a rail instead of the usual private jets.
Jordi Portabella, who handles the sustainability department of the club said that it wishes to avoid aeroplanes and travel by train more often whenever possible in order to communicate the club’s role in finding a solution to climate change.
Portabella also said that to make the rail travel even more green, the club had requested Refine – the national railway company of Spain – to use renewable energy for the trip so that it releases minimum greenhouse gases.
As per a report by sport.es website, earlier, Barcelona’s coach Xavi Hernandez had stated that travelling by train was an ‘environmental issue’ and it gave the players and the staff more time to interact with each other and prepare for the next match.
FC Barcelona’s recent travel by train is a great gesture to promote the importance of climate change and sustainable way of doing our day-to-day work. Such actions are bound to encourage the global community to take climate change and the issue of global warming seriously. And football being the most popular global sport with millions of followers worldwide can have a colossal influence in addressing the issue. More leading clubs should follow the action of Barcelona and make the football industry a champion in climate action.
