Largest climate summit (COP27) begins in Egypt, world leaders stand united against climate change

Sci-Tech Desk: The biggest global climate summit of the year the COP 27 – Conference of Parties – began in Egypt on Monday.

COP, which comprises of around 192 countries as its members is held at a different location every year. It is being annually conducted by United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) since 1994, and this year it is its 27th edition.

Leaders from around 120 countries are taking part in this summit this year which also comprise of the heads of many states.

During the COP conferences the member countries come together with an aim of taking collective action towards climate change.

According to a report by UN media, this year too the countries have gathered at Sharm El-Sheikh city in Egypt to take action against climate crisis and achieve the goals which were agreed in the Paris Agreement taken during COP 21 (2015), Paris and evaluating the progress made after the Glasgow conference last year.

By welcoming the climate leaders and the global community to the summit, the president of the host nation Egypt Abdel Fattah El-Sisi stated that “COP 27 is an opportunity to showcase unity against an existential threat that we can only overcome through concerted action and effective implementation”.

Likewise, the Secretary General of UN Antonio Guterres in statements on Twitter said that the damage caused by climate change can no longer be ignored by the global community and requires a “clear, time bound roadmap reflective of the scale and urgency of the challenge”.

He also said that that the crisis of climate change is at a different scale compared to other global problems and it should be regarded as the “fight of our lives – and we are losing.”

Further, he also urged all the global community to unite in solidarity and contribute towards climate action by minimizing the emission of greenhouse gases to net-zero.

COP 27 which will take place from 6th to 18 November 2022 place will also mark the 30th anniversary of the enactment of the UNFCCC.

As per its official website, over 35, 000 participants are expected to be a part of this summit, with over 2,000 plus speakers from around the world covering over 300 topics.

Each day of the summit has also been divided into different themes.
