Rishi Sunak, first Hindu Prime Minister of Britain

Global Desk: Indian origin British politician Rishi Sunak has been elected as the prime Minister of the United Kingdom and the leader of the Conservative Party.

Sunak unanimously elected unopposed after party rivals Penny Mordaunt stepped down from the nomination process after failing to gather the minimum support of 100 members.

Earlier, former prime Minister Boris Johnson had also refrained from filing nomination for the party elections even after claiming that he had the support of 100 MPs, although not officially announcing the same.

Rishi Sunak on the other hand received the support of over 150 MPs for filling the post after Liz Truss tendered her resignation due to the failure of her policies to control the present economic crisis which includes rising taxes, energy price, unemployment, weakening of the British Pound among others.

Sunak’s elevation as the Prime Minister is regarded as a momentous occasion for the history of British and world politics, as he has become the first Asian-Indian origin and Hindu Prime Minister of Britain.

Leaders across the world starting from Joe Biden to Narendra Modi have congratulated him and wished him on the occasion.

US President Biden has said that this is a ground-breaking and incredible moment for inclusive politics.

Similarly, apart from extending Diwali wishes, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other leaders form his party have expressed their happiness that Sunak has become the first Indian origin and Hindu Prime Minister of UK and hoped that both the nations will work together to further strengthen bilateral relations.

The opposition leader from the Labour Party at the House of the Commons Sir Keir Starmer who has been demanding a general election has also said that Sunak becoming the Prime Minister of Britain is symbolic the multicultural and inclusive nature of Britain as a nation.

Following his elevation as the Tory leader, Sunak met King Charles and received is official appointment letter to lead the country.

In one of his initial speeches, he admitted the mistakes done by his predecessors and vowed to fix the economic crisis with immediate action. Besides, he also promised to unite the divided party.

Further, Sunak also selected his cabinet team comprising of the loyalists for his own team and the supports of his predecessor Liz Truss.

As the Prime Minister, Sunak engaged in telephonic conversation with the US President Biden and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy as part of his international commitments.

Additionally, on Wednesday, he spoke in the British parliament and answered questions form the opposition for the first time as the leader of the Conservative party.
