Serena Williams says goodbye to tennis court

Sports Desk: Serena Williams on Friday played her last grand slam match after failing to advance to the next round of the ongoing US Open.

After giving her best in the three hour long third round match, Williams was finally defeated by Australian Ajla Tomljanovic with a score of 5-7, 7-6(4), 1-6.

Serana made a comeback in the second round after losing the first by two points. she was highly competitive during the opening two rounds, however she failed to sustain the momentum and was completely outplayed in the decider round.

During the post-match interaction, emotional Williams thanked everyone including her sister Venus Williams, her parents and little daughter Olympia for their support throughout her career.

Mentioning about her sister and legendary tennis star Venus Williams, Serena said that without her sister she would not have been what she is today.

Taking about her own tennis career, Willimas said she is a fighter and always brought something new to the tennis court through her intensity, passion, and looks.

About her post tennis life, she said that she believes she is young and looks forward to exploring different facades of her own while she is still walking.

The WTA in its official Twitter account has called Willimas retirement as an ‘end of an era’ in the world of tennis.

While, cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar congratulated Williams on her ‘inspiring career’ and said that “age is not what the body tells you……..Sports inspires the society to push limits and achieve the impossible.”

40-year-old Serena Williams have 23 grand slams in the woman’s singles category during her career spanning over decades. She finished just one title short of Australian Margaret Court in this regard which she tried to equal but has been unsuccessful due to recurrent injuries.
