Shashi Tharoor to run for Congress presidential polls?

India: Reports from the media say that Congress leader Shashi Tharoor might be throwing his hat in the ring for the upcoming presidential elections of the crisis hit Congress party, although he is yet to take a final decision.

In an article in the Malayalam daily newspaper ‘Mathrubhumi’, Tharoor vouched for a free and fair elections for the top post and stated that these elections would be a new beginning which would revitalize the Congress party.

By comparing these elections to the United Kingdom’s ongoing Conservative party elections, he asserted that it would boost public interest towards the grand old national party again.

Furthermore, he also stated that he hopes that several leaders within the party come ahead and put forward their visions for the party and the nation.

The Congress party, which has been fighting for its political relevancy among have been losing elections after elections under the leadership of the Gandhi family. Besides, there is also an ongoing internal discord within the party members who are unhappy with the party’s present organizational structure, system, and leadership. As a result, several veteran and young leaders have stepped aside from the party, with the recent example being Ghulam Nabi Azad.

Going with the call for leadership change and structural reforms, the Congress on Sunday announced that the lections for the new party leader will take place on 17th October. The results of the same will be announced on 19th October.

During the party press conference on Sunday, AICC general secretary KC Venugopal said that it will be an open election, and anybody is welcome to contest it.

Although, reports also say that Rahul Gandhi still continues to be the favourite among many party leaders and want him to contest and win the elections. However, Gandhi has remined obdurate in his opinion and showing unwillingness to take up the presidential post again.
