Jagdeep Dhankhar elected as the new Vice President of India

India: Jagdeep Dhankhar took oath as the new Vice President of India in New Delhi on Thursday.

His oath ceremony took place in a ceremonial manner in the presence of the President Draupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, former Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu and other cabinet ministers and members of the opposition.

Dhankhar has been elected as the new Vice President after he secured 74.36 per cent of vote share over opposition’s Margaret Alva in the vice precedential elections, which is the highest ever votes received by a candidate during the last six vice presidential elections.

Prior to being elected as the Vice President, 71-year-old Dhankhar was serving as the governor of West Bengal.

Born in an agrarian family in Rajasthan, Dhankhar graduated in Physics and later completed his LLB from the University of Rajasthan and stepped into a career as a lawyer.

He embarked into his political career after he was elected as the Member of Parliament in the Lok Sabha in 1989 from the Jhunjhunu in Rajasthan and represented the Janata Dal party.
