Draupadi Murmu to be the first tribal President of India

India: Draupadi Murmu has been elected as the 15th President of India. Murmu was chosen for the constitutional post through the votes of the elected representatives of the nation.

In the presidential election where MLAs and MPs from all the states and union territories in India casted their votes, Murmu secured the majority and defeated the opposition candidate and the former Union Minister Yashwant Sinha by a margin of 64 per cent votes.

The counting which was conducted on Friday morning lasted for around 10 hours.

With this victory, Draupadi Murmu has become the first tribal leader and the second lady President of India.

Leaders across the political parties have congratulated Murmu on winning the presidential elections.

By congratulating her, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that Murmu’s victory with an overwhelming majority is a positive sign for the democracy. He also said that he is hopeful that she will be an “outstanding President who will lead from the front and strengthen India’s development journey.”

Similarly, opposition candidate Yashwant Sinha also thanked his voters and congratulated Murmu on winning the presidential elections.

In an official press release posted on social media, he said that he hopes Murmu would function as the “custodian of the constitution without fear or favour”.

Draupadi Murmu who hails from Odisha will be replacing Ram Nath Kovind as the new President of India. She will officially take over as the President after the oath taking ceremony which is likely to be held on July 25th.
