Editorial Desk: Flood in Assam has become a routine destroyer of Assam`s socio-economic life. Till yesterday, we had only Bihu dances and general musical performances by the popular performers. Immediately after, we are damned with routine floods and land erosions. The arable lands have diminished phenomenally. Thousands of villages are washed away by the erosions taking place in almost all the rivers. This has brought in economic depression and poverty to the people of the state. Unemployment problem in the state has multiplied beyond repair. For this the state has also been miserably deprived of human resources from the youthful gems. The government has also failed to utilize the resourcefulness of the young talents. With the loss of arable lands most of the peasants have been pauperized. The government is also forced to spend heavy finances for relief and rehabilitation of the flood-affected masses. The utility of the embankments constructed along the rivers misfired. The sensible sections of the society are demanding for declaring flood in Assam as a national problem, but the government is thinking otherwise. The flood situations have also generated the problems of migration from one place to the other place. Countless people have become rootless by losing their lands and houses and life stocks. This time most of the fisheries of the villagers have seen the loss of their economic treasures. The paddy fields are destroyed. Their houses are washed away by erosions caused by the turbulent rivers. Many school buildings are also washed away. Many religious centers, mandirs and masjids are also washed away. If the situation continues for some more years, the central government will have to take projects for rehabilitation of the people elsewhere in India. Are we waiting for that ?
