Editorial Desk: Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma, an experienced politician in Assam political life, has completed one eventful year as the Chief Minister of Assam. To do desired justice to this political position is an easy task. Assam is a medley mix of many ethnic communities, conscious of their ethnic identities.

There is nothing wrong in it. During the one year rule as the Chief Minister of this volatile state, he has tried his best to identify their long standing issues, and  has also tried his best to economically elevate their status to a reasonable social height, hitherto unexplored during the past. Assam as we know, is a state with mixed populations. The ethnic communities, primarily originating from the Chino-Tibetan stock, have their own dialects for communication amongst themselves. But, the difficult point is that one ethnic community does not understand the dialect of the other community. For example, a Bodo woman does not understand the dialect of the Mising community – the largest and the second largest ethnic communities in Assam. For them the lingua franca is nothing other than Assamese.

It is also equally true that Assamese language has also drawn profusely from all the ethnic dialects of Assam. Interestingly, Assamese language too has its local diversities The people of Sadiya may not understand the Assamese language spoken by the rural folk of Goalpara. The people of Barpeta speak and language with its own forms and accents. But, while writing every one, irrespective local differences, do write beautifully. Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma, being aware of this linguistic differences and affinities, has tried to develop the dialects of each and every linguistic community. This will help the communities to develop their own dialects.

We  want the tribal languages in the state should receive their due status in our multifaceted cultural life. For this Dr Himanta  Biswa Sarma ought to have a language policy for the enrichment of Assamese language through the enrichment of our tribal languages. No language can survive in total isolation.
